Carla Prado, Professor / PhD, RD

Dr. Prado is a Professor at the University of Alberta in Canada and a Campus Alberta Innovation Program chair in Nutrition, Food and Health. She is also the director of the Human Nutrition Research Unit, a top equipped facility worldwide. She is an expert in assessing nutritional status through the precise measurement of body composition and energy metabolism. The focus of her current research program is to develop targeted nutrition interventions for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia in patients with diverse conditions. She is currently the principal investigator for four randomized controlled trials investigating the impact of nutrition intervention on body composition and health.

Carla is an Editorial Board member of Clinical Nutrition, the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, and Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care.  She is a past recipient of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40, an award that celebrates exceptional young Canadian leaders of all sectors, and she was recently inducted into the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. 

The Role of Nutrition in the Sarcopenia Epidemic: Following the Yellow Brick Road

This presentation will provide an overview on the prevalence and consequences of sarcopenia in different clinical settings, and in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. A review of new evidence on targeted nutrition interventions to prevent/halt this condition will be provided, as well as future directions regarding the integration of sarcopenia assessment and treatment into patient care.
