Pre-Conference - Food for Health Workshop

Nutrition as a Human Right – Dialogue on Disease Related Malnutrition

Workshop Overview

The 2022 Food For Health Workshop brings experts together from across Canada and around the world to have a focused dialogue on Disease Related Malnutrition (DRM) in the context of the WHO/UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. We will provide a broad perspective of DRM so that participants from a diversity of backgrounds, disciplines and geographies learn about DRM as a medical, ethical and health system consideration which impacts individual and health system outcomes in a negative way. We will learn about the sustainable development goals that have been articulated in the Decade of Action on Nutrition to include Nutrition as a Human Right. One of the goals of the workshop is to shine a light on policy approaches to addressing DRM. We will learn from federal, provincial and private sector experiences.  The goal of the workshop is to allow us to form effective alliances within Canada to advance scientific understanding and the policy landscape to address DRM and to work with stakeholders from around the world in order to advance this work globally so that we may benchmark with other countries and organizations.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe Malnutrition, Disease Related Malnutrition (DRM) and system wide implications of DRM that impact Nutrition Care
  2. Explore and understand Nutrition as a Human Right to include linkage to Sustainable Development Goals and the Decade of Action on Nutrition
  3. Understand Policy implications that may influence DRM from the federal, provincial/territorial and private sector perspective
  4. Discuss how to improve DRM within the Decade of Action on Nutrition – by leveraging experiences by different sectors – and including policy approaches
